    Academic Profile

I received my bachelor’s degree from Bar Ilan University in Ramat Gan in Psychology and Education. My master’s  degree from Bar Ilan University School of Education was on the ways of new immigrant students, and my doctoral thesis was on the educational beliefs of Bible Studies and Jewish Oral Law (Torah she-be-’al peh) teachers in the religious school system.

My main area of interest is religious education in Israel. Over the years, as part of my work, and in order to advance it, I have worked on different research projects at the Institute of Religious Education Research. These projects have investigated aspects of different groups in religious education: pupils, education students, teacher instructors in academic teacher training colleges, teachers and principals in different schools. In the past year, I have been involved in intensive research on religious and civil sanctity in junior high schools. For the first time this research, for the includes a comparative element, which compares religious state education and secular state education and how teachers from the various sectors create the special atmosphere of sanctity that exists on national memorial days.

My research focuses on teacher thinking and attitudes. To analyze teacher attitudes I use quantitative tools that offer a broad and comprehensive perspective. This includes questionnaires that I developed over the years and qualitative tools that allow me to probe and investigate the processes experienced by teachers.

My teaching areas—Religious Education, Introduction to Curriculum Planning and Quantitative Research—interface with my research areas and complement the theoretical facets of my work. I feel that contact with students contributes greatly to my work and encourages me to keep up to date.

I plan to expand my research in the near future mainly by studying new populations and working with Jewish schools outside Israel and ultra-orthodox education in Israel. No systematic study of these groups has been undertaken yet that describes and analyzes religious education from the differing perspectives of pupils, teachers, and school principals.
