About us

The faculty of education is home to around 1500 students, staff members, visiting scholars, and teachers. It is committed to conducting educational research on global, comparative, and transnational issues. The diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee (DEI) is committed to the following community values:

Valuing diversity

No matter a person's gender identity or expression, color, political leanings, place of birth, religion, outward appearance, physical limitations, or other status, we respect and uphold their inherent worth and right to free speech. Individually and collectively, we are responsible for the effects of our words and actions on other individuals and the community. We promise to put forth great effort to ensure that no one is subjected to racism, prejudice, or microaggressions.

Integrity, honesty, and sincerity

Each member of the community undertakes to conduct themselves honestly and morally, in accordance with the highest moral and professional standards. We promise to foster an atmosphere of open communication and openness.

Collaborating to achieve excellence

Working together to achieve success is important to us because we are committed to the highest standards of research, teaching, and learning. As academics, staff, visitors, and students, we all actively and deliberately collaborate to achieve academic success.

Empathy and compassion

We acknowledge the many challenges we face in our personal lives, such as balancing work and family responsibilities, rearing children, looking after the elderly, dealing with illness and handicap, and more. We care for and are sensitive to the members of our community, and we work together to adapt to changing conditions.

Accountability for inappropriate behavior

Individually and collectively, we are responsible for the effects of our words and actions on other individuals and the community. We promise to put forth great effort to ensure that no one is subjected to racism, prejudice, or microaggressions.

As we defend these community values, we endeavor to incorporate them into the faculty of education's policies, processes, and directives. Our ongoing effort includes, but is not limited to:

  • leveraging multiple communication channels to continuously seek feedback from faculty, staff, visitors, and students on areas for development and improvement.
  • acknowledging the institutional power disparities at the university, which are particularly detrimental to the well-being of nontenured faculty, staff, and students.
  • fostering a culture of speaking up and empowering all community members, especially women and those with stigmatized identities.
  • integrating an equity lens into our daily work and critically assessing faculty of education policies, practices, and standards that might be a contributing factor in systematic inequalities.
  • Realizing that this work oftentimes needs us to engage in difficult conversations and calls for cultural humility and compassion.
