The Brain and Language Lab
Different clinical populations suffer from difficulties in language, executive functioning, and pragmatics understanding necessary for proper functioning in daily life. The Brain & Language Lab studies the ways to improve cognitive, verbal, and pragmatic abilities in clinical populations including people with ASD, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder (ADHD), intellectual disabilities, and schizophrenia. A thorough understanding of these difficulties and the development of training programs to improve those difficulties requires a combination of careful diagnosis with relevant theoretical knowledge. On the other hand, Mashal’s lab has set itself the goal of improving an individual’s unique and creative thinking ability. The research methods used in the lab are electrical brain stimulation (tDCS), neuropsychological experiments, electrophysiology (ERP), and examination of hemispheric differences (DVF).
The MA Neuroeducation program was established 3 years ago to implement the mission to apply the growing body of knowledge in neuroscience and psychology in the educational field. Despite the widespread knowledge accumulating in the neurosciences, very little is leaking into the education system and special populations in particular. The overarching goal of the program is to equip program learners with research-based tools and intervention programs so that they can improve an individual’s cognitive, pragmatic, and verbal abilities. As part of the program, students will receive an extensive theoretical basis of various developmental disabilities and will be exposed to studies in the brain sciences that link these disabilities to the relevant brain function.
We collaborate with medical centers (e.g., BioKeshev) and research centers such as the CCNY Neural Engineering Group (NY) that study the effects of electricity on the human body and apply this knowledge toward the development of medical devices and electrical safety guidelines
