The Emotion Socialization & Neuroscience Lab
The ESN lab focuses on understanding how neurobiological and interpersonal factors support typical and atypical emotional development, with an emphasis on the development of depression during adolescence and the parent-adolescent relationship. We use a combination of methods to assess subjective emotional experience (daily diaries, behavioral observations) with objective measures focusing on neural and hormonal activation (fMRI, cortisol, and oxytocin). While most of the research on parenting focuses on the parent, and most of the developmental research focuses on the child, the ESN adopts a dyadic perspective.
This year will focus on setting up the new lab in BIU and designing research protocols as well as running two studies: (1) an online study on the interpretation of social situations and interpersonal emotion regulation in adolescents, and (2) a study in Tel-Aviv Medical Center, Ichilov on well-being and emotion regulation in families in which the children have Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1).
The ESN lab has ongoing collaborations with Dr. Haran Sened, Dr. Noga Cohen, and Dr. Joy Bentov from Haifa University, Dana Lassri from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and Dr. Hagit Toledano from The Tel-Aviv Medical Center – Ichilov
The ESN lab has ongoing collaborations with Dr. Jutta Joormann from Yale University, Dr. Hedy Kober from Berkley University, Dr. Jonas Everaert from Tilburg University, Dr. Michael Bronstein from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, and Dr. James Gross from Stanford University.

The current team includes two international Ph.D. students, a postdoctoral fellow, and six M.A. students from the Academic College Tel-Aviv Yaffo. As this is my first year at BIU, I am looking for new students (B.A., M.A., and Ph.D.) interested in my research.
